Sally's Camp

The following is a service opportunity brought to us by the Relief Society group, "Angels Among Us".

The Salvation Army "Sally's Camp" (following in the book 'Breakfast at Sally's' theme) is now under development.

Families from all over the county will be cared for at this camp site.

Major Baker and others met with the city of Bremerton earlier this week and plans are moving forward quickly. We plan on being operational no later than 1-1-'11.

There will be 10 4-person tents (these are being requested individually) plus a central, larger tent (already secured) that will have heat, stove, fridge, microwave, table and chairs for doing homework, etc. Families will be screened through KCR and all will have case management which will provide connections on resources and help getting in to affordable housing. There will be background checks on all involved; no sex offenders permitted at all. Health, fire, police and other orgs are ensuring that the safety and security of the families is paramount. We are all working together with The Salvation Army (TSA) to provide a temporary, emergency shelter to these families that would otherwise be living in their vehicles or tents without warmth, security or sanitation.

To do this we need your help.
* We need to fund two sani-cans at the site, both approx. $130/mo for six months.

* We need to cover the increased costs of garbage, water, sewer, electricity, etc. that TSA will incur.

* There is a need for paper products of all types: cups, bowls, plates, paper towels, T-paper, diapers, and plastic eating utensils.

* Sleeping bags rated 32 degrees or lower, adult and child size. When the severe weather shelters are operational, families who wish to go will be shuttled over and back. Others can stay in the main heated tent.

* Single size air mattresses are needed as insulation beneath the sleeping bags.

* Battery-free hand crank lanterns for each tent (amazon.com has good sales now) run under $20/ea.

If you can help, please send your tax-deductible donation to:
The Salvation Army
P.O. Box 886
Bremerton, WA 98377
and on the memo line of your check write: Sally's Camp.

If you have items to deliver, the street address is:

832 Sixth St. between 8 am and 4 pm, Monday thru Friday.
If you have any questions I'd be happy to respond.

Bishop's Christmas

I love August and September. Stores start to clearance their items to make room for the upcoming holiday items. It is a great time to start shopping for Christmas gifts.

With that in mind, starting next week we will be collecting items for the Deseret Industries "Bishop's Christmas". Our assignment is the age group of 14-17 year old males and females. All gifts must be NEW and unwrapped.

Stuck on what to get? Clothing, CDs, DVDs, bath and body items, bean bags, gift cards, books, games, anything electronic, jewelry....or ask any of the youth in the ward for ideas.

Donation boxes will be available by the Relief Society Room on Sundays and at all mid-week Relief Society Meetings. All Donations must be turned in by November 21st.

Nairobi Orphanage

Lisa and Bree Leach of the 6th ward are going to the House of Peace Orphanage in Nairobi at the end of the month.

They will be taking supplies for the orphanage to use to purchase food and other supplies to meet the basic needs of the children.

The following items are needed:
Money
Toothpaste
Toothbrushes

GNO: Laughter is the best medicine!

It's finally here! Tomorrow, Friday 7/23, is this quarters Girls Night Out--A night where you get to come and have a good time just hanging out with your girlfriends.

Did you know that laughter is a powerful antidote to stress, pain, and conflict? Laughter relaxes the whole body, boosts the immune system, triggers the release of endorphins and protects the heart. Humor lightens your burdens, inspires hopes, connects you to others, and keeps you grounded, focused, and alert.

So come laugh (and get healthy) with funny man Brian Regan.

We will be getting together at Dianna Byron's house (1114 Lombard Court) at 6:30pm. Light refreshments will be served.
